Was 5 months away from paying off my student loans for good…just got laid off today.
I was in 117k of student loan debt from getting my masters degree back in 2022. I had gotten a job right after graduating (86k annual income) but then got laid off 3 months in because the CEO decided to lay off thousands of people. I was unemployed for over a year (applying DAILY) and then finally found another job in 2024 for a small non profit, making 50k a year. It was a very difficult step down in my career but it had been such a long period of unemployment and I was desperate. 7 months in, I got laid off again due to lack of funding from the government 🫠.
Fortunately I was already in the process of looking for work and was able to land another job quickly, paying 80k. I was at that job for a whole year and 1 month, until today I was told I was getting laid off due to budget reasons.
I am just absolutely devastated. I was putting every penny of my paycheck into my loans so I don’t have to be in debt anymore (fortunately I live with my family so a lot of expenses were covered for me). All I have wanted was to pay off my student loans and finally start saving, and now it feels impossible 😥. I have been doing everything in my power to stay employed in this awful job market, and it seems like no matter what I do, I keep failing.
