Heal Coral Tree Quest

I give up! I get to a certain point and then the roots don't retreat. I can see the trash on the other side, but there is no way to get there. All ways are blocked. (It is by the ship if that helps). I have allowed the trash to respawn, I have gone back to earlier paths and done them all over again and I STILL cannot get to the other side. Is this quest necessary or can I just forget about it? I am so ticked off right now that I'm ready to be done with this game altogether.
