Heat
Just finished watching Heat and enjoyed it for the most part, but there were a few things that really broke my immersion on a couple of occasions.
Firstly, after the bank heist there were no helicopters in the air to track De Niro and Kilmer as they made their botched escape?
Also, De Niro seems to have freedom of movement, freely moving around to carry out his assassinations and conduct his meetings after the bank heist. Surely after such a huge shootout with so many casualties, their faces would be plastered all over the news.
The scene with Val Kilmer getting stopped by a unit specifically tasked with setting him up and them not recognising him because he’s had a haircut. Seriously?
De Niro running across an open field at the airport into cover where the final shootout took place. He could have easily used that cover to ambush and kill Al Pacino as he crossed the grass or as he arrived at the cover. Hes incredibly calculating but doesnt see this opportunity.
Also, let’s not overlook the writing for the women characters. Some innocent, bookish graphic designer isn’t going to crack and try to walk away when all the cops turn up at the hotel and she’s alone with a real shot of getting away from De Niro?
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie I would give it an 8/10, but for me calling it a masterpiece is a huge stretch.
