Help registering Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation

I did a reset on my device to clear out the library. Now I am having trouble registering the device back to my amazon account. When I put in my amazon login, it says "unable to connect. Your kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please try again later." Any suggestions on how I can register my device? Thank you.
