One Story, One Savior – Episode 3 The City That Saves Written by Gilles L.-C.
The tribe of Levi had no bordered land,
No state to call their own command.
No fields, no flags, no tribal claim—
“The Lord Himself,” God said, “your gain.”
Yet still they lived among the tribes,
In cities spread through Israel’s lines.
For God commanded, tribe by tribe,
To give them homes where all could find
The servants called to teach His way,
To guard His Word, to intercede.
Not gathered tight in priestly towers,
But scattered wide through towns and hours.
So light would move from street to street,
And truth would walk on common feet.
And so today God sends His own
Not locked in walls, but widely sown:
“To let your light before men shine,”
Till Christ is seen through yours and mine.
But more than towns and dwelling ground,
Six special cities were marked out—
Six strongholds placed on mercy’s road,
Where guilty fear could drop its load.
The cities stood through all the land,
So none were far from God’s command.
And what were these appointed for?
A refuge from avenging sword.
For one who killed without intent,
Whose hands were stained, but heart not bent.
Until the judges weighed the case,
The city held his guarded place.
Stone and gate, and watchful wall,
A shelter strong against the fall.
Not proof of innocence, but space
Where justice paused and mercy stayed.
And here the deeper music plays,
For Christ now stands where refuge stays.
Not built of brick, not raised of sod,
But God Himself, our hiding God.
From righteous wrath and judgment due,
There is one place to which we flee.
The old design was drawn to show
The truer safety Christ would grow.
The cities spoke in silent sign:
Salvation waits within a line.
For once inside, the one who ran
Must dwell within that guarded land.
Beyond the walls, his life was thin,
But safety breathed where refuge had been.
Until the high priest’s death would bring
His freedom back to everything.
And now the greater Priest has died,
Not for Himself, but in our place.
And by His blood the gates stand wide,
And mercy frees the bound and chased.
What law could not forever do,
The Son of God has carried through.
“The Lord,” the psalmist sang with praise,
“Is my Refuge, my hiding place.”
But more than fleeing in the storm,
We’re called to dwell where Christ is Lord.
Not visiting the walls of grace,
But making Christ our living place.
For there is no safe ground outside
The Savior’s wounds, the Savior’s side.
As Hebrews warns with urgent breath:
We flee to hope that rescues death.
Both city and the Christ declare:
One shelter stands, though all despair.
Both open wide to great and small,
Both set apart as mercy’s call.
Both offer life, both guard the soul,
Both stand where righteous judgment rolls.
The cities helped the blameless live.
But Christ receives what none could give.
The innocent once found their stay—
The guilty now are bid, “Come… stay.”
So not to walls of ancient stone,
But to a pierced and living throne,
We run, we rest, we rise, we breathe—
The City where the lost believe.
One story told in many ways.
One Savior crowning every page.
