How to radicalize Liberals and Conservatives?

General Leftist Politics

While I understand and appreciate the ire directed at liberals, I do wonder if we’re far-too-often coming from a place of hostility and not empathy.

I’m from Hawai’i, which is a one-party Democrat hegemonic state, and was raised in a very liberal household. Leftist education and literacy here is all but nonexistent, but I do GENUINELY believe that aloha lives in every one of us raised on the islands. The problem is there are only two places to put one’s vote, and given that lack of understanding, it will always go towards Democrats when good-intentioned people have not yet been disillusioned by the system and if so, head-first into MAGA votes because that side has co-opted Hawaiian issues as a way of shoehorning in far right ideals into the everyday lives of people who might not otherwise be receptive.

Now, my family isn’t bad. Far from it. They’re loving, warm, giving, empathetic people filled to the brim with aloha. But they are very quick to write-off leftist ideals as being unrealistic or sometimes, from the perspectives of older uncles and aunties, downright dangerous. This is of course, due to decades of baked-in US propaganda.

Now, in recent years, and very pointedly in recent months, I’ve seen happen what I’d hoped might happen should Trump win again: people are starting to see through the facade of the American dream. They’re starting to recognize their enemies more clearly—this could NEVER happen should a Dem be in power.

But there’s a problem that still lies in that people don’t know where to direct their energy. THEIR ire. So, it always goes down the same channels, towards the same neoliberal monsters that have delivered this hell to us—because the lie of Democrats being the imperfect, but “practical” and “inherently righteous” answer when measured against the Republicans.

What I’ve seen recently, though, is a type of recognition of who’s at fault that I’ve never before seen in my life. “Socialism” is no longer the radioactive word it once was. “Communism” starts to look exactly like what Native Hawaiian society was prior to western contact. People are becoming receptive, but need to be pushed further. Older folks who don't have the capacity or desire to learn theory and Marxist philosophy, but would benefit from the materialism of what could be presented. Younger folks who just need to see that there are other options.

So, the question is: what are some strategies you’ve implemented in your lives and communities that help unshackle and organize your well-meaning friends; family, and communities when presenting not only the monsters controlling their lives, but the true progressive and leftist alternatives that would help us escape from this?
