Cloning drive to replace C drive - all other SATA drives disappear from Windows when new cloned drive installed.
I've got a 500gb NVME Crucial mx500 drive that I'm attempting to clone via usb NVME enclosure and replace with a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 1tb drive.
Once I finally get the new cloned drive installed and Windows booted, two SATA SSDs I have in the system are not seen by Windows.
Motherboard is Gigabye AB350-Gaming 3 - I believe on latest firmware (or at least fairly new).
Here's my full sequence:
-
Make the clone with Macrium Reflect Free. All partitions are the same, but the main one is expanded to fill the additional space
-
Switched new clone into the (single) NVME slot, turn on computer
-
Bios says Inaccessible boot drive and starts trying to repair, reboot, etc. Can't do it.
-
I attempted all kinds of things like enabling and disabling CSM, UEFI in the bios, etc. Disabled all drives it sees (even my bluray drive!) so it doesn't try to boot from them. No joy.
-
Finally, saw online that if you boot Windows to safe mode, problem is fixed.
-
Was able to boot to safe mode, and then reboot to regular mode after this
-
however in both modes, two SATA drives are not visible anymore in explorer and disk manager. Plus, Windows explorer and device manager see a Generic USB mass storage drive that doesn't work (and nothing is plugged in). The new NVME is listed correctly.
-
The computer takes a while to react and shut down when the command is given
Replacing the original NVME drive puts the computer back to normal. Those drives are visible and working.
Appreciate any help! Thank you!
