Discovering "Style"

There's so little interest in individuality, I feel so many people just wear clothes based on what others think. The reason I bring this up is because I fall into this trap too. Sometimes I feel myself being pulled into a brand's identity and world without taking from their collections and implementing into who I am. I guess what I'm asking is how can you reach a nuanced balance of individuality and social perception.
