Scammy Moving Company - Advice?

Location: I'm located in CA, the move originated in Chicago, the moving company is based in New Jersey (Essex County).

I'll do my best to provide all relevant information, but please let me know if anything pertinent is missing. I'm feeling a little rattled and this whole situation feels convoluted, so please forgive me!

I booked movers in early February over the phone who were to help clear out my storage unit in Chicago, IL and move my belongings to Los Angeles, CA. My stuff had been in storage for over a year, so I did my best to provide them with accurate info on the contents of my unit. Based on the initial quote, they collected a "50% deposit" (yes, I'm aware now how foolish it was to pay deposit upfront! missed red flag number one). Upon reflection after that call, I realized there was probably more I needed to add and there was a quality assurance call in which we gathered that info together and came up with a much more accurate estimate of how much stuff I had (480 cubic feet). At the end of that call, they once again had me fill out paperwork for another deposit to secure the difference for 50% of the new quote.

The week of the move, the movers called and told me that a snow storm was expected (not true, but I was in the middle of something with no time to check for myself and didn't want to ruffle their feathers as I knew their relationship with me could have a direct result on how much I would be charged) and that they needed to push the move up a day (even though the back up days for my move were the following days, not before). I made myself flexible and agreed to meet them the night before the agreed upon move date, having to rush from the airport. The sketchy dudes who met me at my storage unit tried to get me to sign paperwork before any of the work with blank spaces for the full final amount. I was not about to sign that and did not. We went up to my storage unit and it was not packed efficiently, so it was taking up a good chunk of the space, but I knew that had it been packed up efficiently, it would be taking much less space up in the truck. The young kid there called someone not on site and sent pictures and videos for the "physical assesment". They were argumentative and tried to tell me my stuff was 1,000 cubic feet (when the 8X8X10 unit that wasn't even stacked full could physically only hold 800 cubic feet, but that's a fact I did not have with me in the moment after a hectic and stressful travel day, etc, etc). They gave me options that were all terrible in my opinion.....leave and I forfeit my deposits altogether. Agree to pay the amount for 1,000 cubic ft of stuff. or lastly, I could let them pack up 450 cubic feet of my stuff and pay my quoted amount, but I'd be leaving stuff behind. I obviously didn't trust them to fairly estimate that amount of stuff, nor did I want to do a partial move!? Because of their lie about inclement weather, we were gathered at night in Central time after office hours, so there was nobody I could talk to from the customer rep team. I told them I wanted to wait til morning (the actual day of my move according to all of the paperwork), contact customer service, and make a more informed decision. They said once they left, that was it. I said whatever, we're certainly not doing this tonight, if at all.

I called the next day. Customer service was not helpful, of course. They said they could send them back out, but there would be a "re-service fee" and they stood by the "physical assesment" that was not done physically. Come to find out, the second deposit was never actually pulled. So I called my bank, fully closed my bank accounts and opened new ones so they could not pull the SECOND deposit. Mind you, I already DID give them a first deposit they successfully pulled over 1k. (embarassing). Today I get an email that I am in breach of contract, that I signed legal documentation to pay these deposits and that if I don't pay, they will escalate to collections and it can affect my credit score. I sent them away, I rented a Penske and facilitated the move myself. The kicker is I got a 12ft rental truck that maxes out at 450 cubic ft and ALL MY STUFF FIT. The movers were so sketchy with their unmarked truck, their blank paperwork, and their bullying tactics. They ALREADY scammed their way into the first deposit having done no work for me. What do I do? What are my options? I feel so silly and pissed and lost.

Apologies if I overshared, I'm really not sure what information is relevant :)
