Ramy (The Hulu series) had a really interesting arc on a "traumatized veteran" that I think is under-discussed.
They introduce Dennis, a traumatized war veteran who Ramy meets at Mo's restaurant. He suffers from severe PTSD and had previously killed a friend while stationed in Iraq.
He's presented as a tragic sympathetic figure even though he's the one who did the killing, just because he's a bit sad about it afterwards.
But nevertheless he tries to redeem himself. He works at the mosque, he converts to Islam, and he's overall a likable figure and the audience even forgives him.
Then he goes and does the same thing in America but this time to do the anti-mosque protester.
Objectively this is just as immoral as it was when he was in Iraq.
It was such an interesting plotline that really throws it in your face how much Americans, even including muslims and Arab disapora, really devalue muslim lives by comparison.
You're ready to forgive him and shrug your shoulders when it's some random Iraqi he killed, but when he does it to an American (even one who's objectively a piece of shit), suddenly it's an actual tragedy and him being sad doesn't seem like such a great excuse anymore.
Really underrated part of the show that I haven't seen discussed anywhere.
