Dealer Financing denied but Banks Approved?
Hey everyone, looking for some guidance on buying a used 2023 Tesla Model Y and running into some financing headaches.
My situation:
- 23 years old, $75K salary
- $8,000 down payment
- Looking at a car around $40K, so roughly $32K in financing after tax/fees
Why I need my dad on ownership (but NOT the loan):
Insurance as a 23-year-old in Toronto is brutal — I'm getting quoted around $900/month on my own for a Model Y. With my dad added to the ownership, that drops to about $350/month. That's a massive difference, so adding him to the ownership is basically non-negotiable for me. I just don't want him on the loan itself since he shouldn't be financially responsible for my car.
What happened with financing:
I went through Tesla's financing portal directly and kept getting rejected — no explanation given. I then tried Clutch and got approved instantly at 6.3%, which is great, except Clutch won't let me add someone to ownership without also putting them on the loan. Tesla apparently allows you to separate ownership from the loan, which is exactly what I need.
My questions:
- Why would Tesla reject me but Clutch approve me? Is Tesla's lending criteria just stricter? Could it be my credit age, debt-to-income ratio, or something else? I have a stable income and a solid down payment so I'm confused.
- Can I get a loan through CIBC and bring it to Tesla as a cash buyer? CIBC isn't one of Tesla's financing partners, but can I just get pre-approved through CIBC independently and pay Tesla directly? Has anyone done this?
- Are there other lenders I should be looking at that might beat 6.3% and that I could bring to Tesla as an outside buyer?
Any advice is appreciated — especially from people in Ontario who've dealt with young driver insurance headaches or Tesla's buying process. Thanks!
