If we are able to do anything freely due to the grace of Christ, what will be our deterrent not to sin?
Let me provide some further context with some bullet points for this question. This may help assist with the narrative of anybody willing to respond.
- In my previous life behind closed doors, I sinned in ways that I simply could not believe I ever would. It went so far against my character.
- This sin became an addiction eventually. Even a coping mechanism. (In reality, it was also making me worse).
- Equally, I became terrified of what else I was capable of doing. I also couldn't understand why nothing terrible was happening to me.
- Eventually when I finally started to speak to others about it from Church, I'd become so messed up that I'd hit the button "too late", and started having regular panic attacks. I've been pretty messed up to say the least ever since.
- Fast forwarding to present day, I have a much closer relationship with Christ. But every time I am aware I am sinning or even might be sinning, my stress levels not only hit the roof but go through it and reach the sky.
- I try telling myself it's okay, Christ's grace is sufficient. But I panic I'm going to go back down evil roads again unless there is a deterrent. This level of freedom terrifies me even more.
- At heart, I am a very sensitive and caring person. But the love in my heart is crushed by the weight of all this stress I am constantly feeling.
- I basically won't allow myself to be free to be me again. I believe what God says is true, but I'm too frightened to accept it. And I can't find an answer in the scriptures that is getting through to me.
- I have already tried speaking with a Pastor about this. But they didn't really provide a response either that helped this feel balanced for me.
