Some parents will justify harshly disciplining their children when necessary. They'll say it worked for them. That children need firm boundaries. That society has gone soft on consequence.

And they're not entirely wrong about consequences. The research does support clear, consistent boundaries — children feel safer when someone is paying attention and holding things steady.

What the research is less supportive of is the harsh part. Punishment that uses aggression — physical or otherwise — tends to get a child to stop, but through fear rather than understanding. Fear doesn't teach better behaviour. It teaches children to be more careful about getting caught.

And some behaviour that looks like it needs the firmest hand isn't a choice at all. It's a brain reacting to overwhelm, an old survival pattern firing before the child can think, or a child testing whether the relationship holds when things get hard. Discipline aimed at those patterns doesn't reach them.

Consequences work. But they work best when the child is calm enough to take them in — and when the behaviour is actually a choice rather than a reaction. That's a narrower target than most people were taught to aim at.
