# Navigating AliExpress as a First-Time Buyer: Everything I Wish Someone Had Told Me (From a 10+ Year Buyer & Official Partner)

Hey r/XpressCoupons 👋

Every week, I get DMs from brand-new AliExpress shoppers asking the same questions:

*"Is this site actually safe?"* *"Why is everyone telling me to use the app instead of the website?"* *"I'm going to get hit with some crazy customs fee, right?"* *"How do these coupon codes actually work?"*

I've been buying on AliExpress for over 10 years, and I've been an official AliExpress affiliate partner for 5+ years. I've placed hundreds of orders, run through every scam pattern, every "welcome deal" version, every customs change, and every coupon glitch you can imagine.

So instead of writing another generic "use buyer protection, check reviews" guide that you can find on 500 other blogs, I want to give you the **actual playbook** I'd hand a friend who's about to place their first order in 2026.

It's longer than a typical post, but if you read it once, you'll skip about two years of expensive lessons.

# 1. First Thing to Understand: AliExpress Is Not "Amazon but Cheaper."

This is the #1 mental model mistake new buyers make.

AliExpress is a **marketplace that connects you directly to manufacturers and small sellers**, most of them in China. There's no big corporate middleman buying inventory, warehousing it, and guaranteeing quality. You're essentially buying wholesale-adjacent, with the tradeoffs that come with that:

* Prices are often 50–80% lower than domestic retail
* Shipping takes longer (7–15 days on Choice, 15 - 45 days standard)
* Product quality ranges from excellent to "what even is this"
* Seller quality matters *a lot* more than the product itself

Once you accept this mental model, everything else gets easier. You stop expecting Amazon's customer service and start using the tools the platform actually gives you (which are genuinely solid if you know how).

# 2. Download the App. Seriously. Don't Skip This.

If you're planning to shop on a desktop because it feels safer or easier, you're already losing money.

AliExpress deliberately reserves better pricing, exclusive coupons, and entire savings features for the mobile app. I've personally compared identical listings on desktop vs. the app and seen **10–15% price differences on the same product from the same seller.**

Features that are app-only:

* The Coins system (daily check-ins, games, coin discounts)
* The Discount Finder (hidden deep coin discounts)
* Bonus Buddies (wheel-spinning coupon rewards)
* Flash sale push notifications
* App-exclusive coupon tiers

My honest take: shop on the app, always. The desktop site is fine for research, but when you're actually checking out, switch to the app.

# 3. Claim Your "Welcome Deal" - But Don't Stop There

As a brand-new user, you have access to perks returning shoppers will never see again. Use them.

Depending on the region and time you sign up, you can expect:

* **Welcome coupons:** Like `NEWUSOFF5` ($5 off $20) or `NEWUSOFF12` ($12 off $80)
* **$0.01 New User Zone items:** Yes, one cent. Mostly small stuff (phone cases, keychains, cables), but it's free-ish with any qualifying purchase
* **Free shipping** on the first order
* **Up to 50–70% off** curated "Welcome Deal" products
* **Auto-applied $3–$5 coupons** deposited into "My Coupons" on registration

**Trap to avoid:** A lot of new users think the welcome deal is "the best it's going to get." It's not. On a $150+ cart, a stacked IFP code + seller coupon + boosted coin discount can beat the welcome bundle by a significant margin. More on that in a sec.

# 4. The Seller Matters More Than the Product

I can't stress this enough. A bad seller can make a great product into a nightmare (wrong item sent, fake tracking, ghosted support). A good seller will fix almost any issue.

My 30-second vetting checklist before I add anything to cart:

* **Store age:** Avoid stores less than 1 year old when possible
* **Feedback score:** 95%+ minimum. Ideally 97%+
* **Number of orders/reviews:** A seller with 2,000+ orders at 95% is miles better than one with 50 orders at 100%
* **Recent reviews:** Sort by "Most Recent" and look at the last 30 days. Drops in quality show up here first
* **Real photo reviews:** Skip sellers where nobody has uploaded photos. Stock images + 5-star text reviews are a huge red flag
* **Detailed ratings:** Check "item as described," "communication," "shipping" - these expand underneath the main score

If I can't find a seller that meets that bar for a given product, I just find a different product. There's always another listing.

# 5. Pick the Right Shipping Method (This Saves Real Money)

This is one of the biggest hidden-fee traps new buyers walk into.

**Choose AliExpress Standard Shipping or Cainiao whenever possible.** These route through national postal services (USPS, Canada Post, Royal Mail, etc.), which charge little to nothing for customs processing.

**Avoid DHL/FedEx/UPS** on cheap items unless you specifically need fast delivery. They're fast, but you'll often get hit with a **$15–$30 brokerage fee per package just for them to process your customs paperwork,** on top of any taxes owed. That "free express shipping" on a $25 item can easily turn into a $45 total cost.

Prioritize listings with:

* ✅ The **"AliExpress Choice"** label - these ship through Cainiao logistics, include tax at checkout in most regions, and can be bundled into one package
* ✅ **"Ship from \[your region\]"** \- already cleared customs, no import fees at all, slightly higher base price but often net cheaper
* ✅ **"Free Return"** labelled items - you can return within 15 days for any reason, no cost

# 6. The 2026 Customs Reality Check (Read This Before You Order)

This is the single most important update for new buyers in 2026, and most blogs haven't caught up.

**🇺🇸 United States:** The $800 "de minimis" exemption that lets packages under $800 enter duty-free has been heavily restricted for goods shipped from China. Shoppers are now reporting **flat surcharges of $25–$50 per package**, regardless of value. That's a tariff on a $12 phone case.

**🇪🇺 European Union:** The old €22 VAT-free threshold is gone. Every item, even a $1 keychain, now incurs VAT at the border. No exceptions.

**🇬🇧 UK / 🇨🇦 Canada / 🇦🇺 Australia:** VAT/GST generally collected at checkout on Choice items, but always verify on the Order Summary screen before paying.

**Before you hit Pay Now**, always expand the Order Summary and look for one of these:

|What you see|What it means|
|:-|:-|
|✅ "VAT included" / "Import charges included"|Covered. No surprise on delivery.|
|⚠️ "VAT / Tax to be collected on delivery."|Expect a bill from your courier.|
|❓ No mention of tax|Ambiguous - pick a Choice item instead|

I literally screenshot this screen on every order over $30. If something goes wrong, it's proof of exactly what I agreed to pay.

# 7. The Discount System Nobody Explains Properly

Okay, this is the part most "first-time buyer" guides completely gloss over - and it's where you leave the most money on the table.

AliExpress doesn't have a discount. It has **layers**, and they stack if you do it right.

Here's the full hierarchy from weakest to strongest:

**Layer 1: Seller Coupons (auto-apply)** Found on the product page. Look for a "Get Coupon" button near the price. Free money, one click.

**Layer 2: Coins Discount (auto-apply, but most people use it wrong).** Everyone thinks coins give you a 2% discount. Technically true, *if* you browse normally. But AliExpress hides deeper coin discounts (20%, 40%, sometimes 65%+) behind specific landing pages. Most buyers never find them.

**Layer 3: Platform Promo Codes (manual, entered at checkout).** This is where IFP codes come in (see below for more). Only one platform code per order.

**Layer 4: Welcome Deals / New User bonuses (auto-apply)** First order only.

**The rule:** AliExpress allows *one platform-level coupon per order*, but you can combine it with a seller coupon AND your coin discount. That's the "triple stack" you'll see experienced buyers talking about.

# 8. How to Actually Unlock the Hidden Coin Discount

Standard browsing gives you 1–5% off with coins. The "deep discount" pages AliExpress hides give you 20%+.

**The manual method (from the** r/Aliexpress **power-user playbook):**

1. Find the item you want. Add it to your **Wishlist** \- don't buy from the search page
2. Open the app's **Coins page → Discount Finder**
3. The algorithm repopulates your wishlist items, but now with much higher coin discounts
4. Tap **"Buy Now"** directly from this page. If you add to the cart instead, the deep discount reverts to the base rate

**The automated method:**

I built a Telegram tool called **XpressCoinsBot** because the manual method is annoying, and AliExpress keeps burying the feature deeper in the app.

Workflow:

1. Tap "Share" on the product in the app → copy link
2. Paste into XpressCoinsBot on Telegram
3. Tap the boosted link, which returns and opens the product in the app with the hidden coin discount active

Real math from a recent order:

|Method|Item|Coin Discount|You Pay|
|:-|:-|:-|:-|
|Standard search|$50|3% (-$1.50)|$48.50|
|XpressCoinsBot link|$50|22% (-$11.00)|$39.00|

Two important notes:

* The bot only works on items that are already **coin-eligible** (look for the coin icon)
* The discount is capped by how many coins you've *collected*. No coins = no discount. Daily check-ins matter.

# 9. Where to Find Actual Working Coupon Codes

Harsh truth: most "AliExpress coupon" sites are recycling expired codes for SEO traffic. You'll waste 20 minutes cycling through dead code and give up.

What actually works:

**IFP codes** \- these are exclusive codes I get through my official AliExpress affiliate partnership. They all start with "IFP," so you know they're verified. They're tiered to your cart total - Check the Megathread in the pinned messages to get the most up to date Coupon Codes:

|Discount|Min Spend|Example Code|
|:-|:-|:-|
|$3 off|$29+|IFPLPFGE|
|$6 off|$59+|IFPWVOZH|
|$9 off|$89+|IFPWZQHG|
|$16 off|$149+|IFPSS3HC|
|$23 off|$199+|IFPCEUXD|
|$30 off|$269+|IFPDHQJI|
|$40 off|$369+|IFPVLGGZ|
|$50 off|$469+|IFPWXMXT|
|$60 off|$599+|IFPTGP3D|
|$70 off|$699+|IFPTVF23|

Rule: **always pick the highest tier your cart qualifies for.** If you're at $260 and the next tier is $269, adding a $9 item you actually need nets you $7 extra savings. Easy math.

I keep the current month's codes posted at **xpresscoupon .com** and push alerts the moment new ones drop through the Telegram channel. The codes rotate monthly and do occasionally hit redemption caps, so if one's not working, there's usually a replacement already posted.

# 10. My Actual First-Order Checklist (The One I'd Hand a Friend)

Before you tap Pay Now on your very first order, run through this:

* \[ \] You're in the **official AliExpress app**, not a mobile browser
* \[ \] Seller has 95%+ feedback, 1+ year old store, lots of recent photo reviews
* \[ \] Shipping method is **AliExpress Standard** or **Cainiao** (not DHL/FedEx)
* \[ \] Ideally, a **Choice** or **Ship from \[your region\]** item
* \[ \] Welcome Deal / new user bonus applied (if eligible)
* \[ \] **Seller coupon** collected from the product page
* \[ \] **Product link run through XpressCoinsBot** on Telegram for the max coin discount
* \[ \] **IFP code** from xpresscoupon .com applied at checkout (highest tier that fits)
* \[ \] Order Summary expanded - **"VAT included"** confirmed, no surprise courier fees coming
* \[ \] Screenshot the final summary before paying

Takes an extra 5 minutes. Saves real money every time.

# 11. Real First-Order Case Study

Here's what a smart first order looks like. A reader messaged me last month wanting a mechanical keyboard around $120.

Here's what she ended up paying:

* **Retail price:** $120
* **Seller coupon** (collected on product page): -$12
* **IFP code** `IFPSS3HC` ($16 off $149+... she added a $35 mouse pad to hit the tier and still netted savings): -$16
* **XpressCoinsBot deep link** (used her accumulated coins): -$23
* **Final paid:** \~$104 for keyboard + mouse pad combo that retailed at \~$155

That's 33% off a combined cart, on her *first order*, without needing an 11.11 or Black Friday sale. Just the stacking method applied correctly.

# 12. If Something Goes Wrong: Buyer Protection Basics

You're going to hear horror stories. Most of them are avoidable if you know the process.

**The 4 things that will save you:**

1. **Open disputes early.** You can open one from day 11 after shipping, up to 15 days after delivery (or up to a 60-day delivery guarantee). Don't wait.
2. **Upload photos and clear descriptions.** Video if possible. The more evidence, the faster the resolution.
3. **Never accept an off-platform refund** (PayPal, bank transfer). It strips your buyer protection. Sellers do this to trap you.
4. **Never close a dispute because a seller asks you to.** If they promise a refund "after you close it," they won't send it. Escalate instead.

If the seller won't respond or refuses a fair solution, hit **"Escalate Dispute"** within 3 days and let AliExpress mediate. The success rate is high if you have evidence.

**Never send money outside AliExpress, never confirm delivery before inspecting the goods, and never fall for "pay $0.01 for a resend" scams.** These are the three patterns that get new buyers every single time.

# TL;DR for People Who Scrolled to the Bottom

1. **Use the app.** Prices are lower, and all features are app-only.
2. **Pick good sellers.** 95%+ feedback, 1+ year old, recent photo reviews.
3. **Ship via Standard or Cainiao.** Avoid DHL/FedEx on cheap items - brokerage fees are brutal.
4. **Check the Order Summary.** Make sure VAT is included before paying.
5. **Stack discounts:** Seller coupon + coin discount (boosted via XpressCoinsBot) + IFP code from xpresscoupon .com. Never settle for one discount.
6. **Use your welcome deal** \- but know the stacking method often beats it on larger orders.
7. **If something goes wrong, open a dispute fast.** Never close it on a seller's promise.
