Root canal tooth re-infected a couple of times – saveable or implant likely?
Hi, I’m looking for general guidance before making a decision with my dentist.
I’m 43. The highlighted tooth in the X-ray has had a root canal and crown/post previously. It has become infected a couple of times over the last year or so. I’ve taken antibiotics which cleared it up each time, and there’s currently no swelling or pain.
I understand no one can diagnose from an X-ray alone, but I’d really appreciate some general opinions on typical treatment paths for something like this.
Questions:
- For a previously root-treated tooth that keeps getting infected, is it often still saveable (e.g. re-root canal or apicoectomy), or does this pattern usually point toward extraction?
- What signs on an X-ray would suggest the tooth is not worth saving (e.g. root fracture, bone loss, failed post, etc.)?
- If extraction is needed, would an implant normally be the preferred option here, or would a bridge be just as reasonable?
- Based on the location (upper premolar area), how common is needing a bone graft or sinus lift for an implant?
- For the UK, what would be a realistic private cost range for:
- extraction
- implant + crown
- and possible bone graft (if needed)
I’m trying to understand whether I should push for a specialist opinion (endodontist) before agreeing to extraction.
Thanks in advance.
