AITA for divorcing my husband because he was just doing his job?

I (34F) was married to my ex-husband (36M) for eight years. He is a criminal defense attorney, and I always respected his work. I know everyone deserves legal representation.

A few years ago, we went through a really difficult financial period after our house was badly damaged in a flood. The repairs drained our savings, and things were stressful for a long time.

One day, he came home and told me he had taken on a huge case, one that would pay enough to solve most of our financial problems. I was relieved. The only thing that felt strange was how secretive he was about it. Normally, he would at least vaguely tell me what kind of case he was working on.

A few weeks later, there was a horrifying case all over the news. A young girl had been abused, nearly killed, and was pregnant. It was absolutely devastating.

I followed the case closely and talked about it often, especially with my husband. He always seemed uncomfortable, but I assumed it was just because of how awful the situation was.

Then I found out he was representing the man accused.

That alone was shocking, but what made it unbearable was my own history. When I was a child, I went through something very similar. My abuser was found not guilty because there was not enough evidence. My husband knew everything about that.

When I confronted him, he admitted that he had originally taken the case for the money.

Then he told me that after reviewing the evidence, he was convinced his client was guilty.

And he was still going to defend him.

He said everyone deserves a defense and that he was simply doing his job.

I filed for divorce that same week. I did not hesitate. The moment he said that, something in me changed. I could not stay married to someone who knew exactly what I had been through and still made that choice.

Some people think I overreacted. Others say they would have done the same.

AITA?
