Yes it's another quitting post.
Hi all,
I just decided to hang up my cape and uninstall HD2 today. I'll get into the reasons why if you guys really want me to, but honestly they've probably all been said before. Instead what I want to talk about is what I think Helldivers did RIGHT.
1: Monetization: Helldivers to me, has been and will continue to remain the shining example that if monetization HAS to be in a game, this is the way to do it. I have no problem, and have never had a problem with things like strategems and vehicles being locked behind them, as long as they are side grades to existing equipment. With rare exception there aren't really FOMO items and premium currency is able to be obtained through regular gameplay at a decent rate. The cosmetics on offer for the most part don't go contrary to the setting and don't break immersion or established lore.
2: The persistent campaign: While it was kind of obvious when the devs forced us into certain outcomes, the organic parts of the player driven narrative were really cool when they happened. Things like the stand at the Creek, saving the kids, and some last minute planet caps to stop invasions were awesome and a really neat thing to have been a part of.
3: The passion for the product: Say what you want about ArrowHead, but the passion they had for the game they were creating was clear, and I think that is what was a part of its huge success when it came out. They created first and third person partial and full reload animations both two handed and one handed that honestly 90% of the player base wouldn't see. Hell even magazines on the ground look different if they were fully or partially empty. In a world where most game studios are racing to the bottom trying to find the minimum viable product they can pair with a cash shop, that level of detail was amazing and a breath of fresh air.
4: The community: The community built up around the game between the role players and dads looking to blow off some steam was really nice and genuinely pleasant to be around. Sure there were a few bad apples but ultimately that's to be expected in a community this large. The extreme majority of randoms I came across were super awesome and cool people.
While I don't exactly want to play Helldivers anymore and most of my friends have moved on I see a lot of negativity being posted and I wanted to look back fondly at all the good times I had along the way. Sure, it's a bit sad, I wish the game was in a different state, but ultimately after 460 hrs and 150 experience levels I feel pretty comfortable in saying I got my $40 worth.
