Struggles with house cleaning services
For various reasons (chronic illness, having a tornado of a child) it would be super helpful for my partner and I to hire a house cleaner to help with keeping our house manageably clean. The biggest barrier is that I struggle with a lot of aspects of having external help with the housework: it feels stressful for me to have people in my space, the lingering smells of most cleaning products bother me, and I really struggle when the housekeepers move things around or leave things in a way that feels wrong. It feels overwhelming to me and I have a hard time letting go. The first two issues are pretty manageable but the last feels really hard.
For example: we had a cleaner come on Wednesday. I did a couple of things to make things easier for them/less distressing for me like move toiletry items out of the shower so they don't have to move them and end up putting them back in the wrong order. After they left I discovered a bunch of small(ish?) things that they did that are bothering me like throwing away my nearly-but-not-all-the-way-empty special toothpaste that I am now out of, putting the nozzle back on my partner's waterpik (they keep it off because otherwise our kid fucks around with it), and throwing the trash away in our recycling bin. It feels exhausting having to fix all those little things, I feel overwhelmed and it sometimes puts me real close to meltdown territory. When I try to set things up to avoid past issues from happening again it feels like they just find a new thing to move or change.
Before we knew that I am autistic my partner often ended up feeling like I hated the house cleaners/cleaning service and that I was angry or at the very least cranky about it. Which was confusing for me because despite the discomfort involved with the service I would try to communicate my appreciation (as my partner was typically the one arranging the cleaning services). I was hoping that knowing I'm autistic and working in accommodations would make things better and I think it has helped some but I'm still struggling. Overall it's worth it but I would love to not feel so overstimulated/emotionally overwhelmed when it's something we pay a good amount for, and I wish it wasn't a source of friction with my partner.
So. Does anyone else struggle with getting cleaning services? Any tips for reducing the pain points around things being out of place/done "wrong"? It seems likely to me that improving communication would help so specific approaches/tips there would be appreciated. I've primarily communicated verbally with house cleaners and it often feels they forget or misremember my specific instructions (like: please clean this deeply and don't bother with that other area at all). The other approach I have thought about is writing out a list of desired tasks and things to avoid but I feel pretty anxious about being an overbearing nightmare client so I haven't tried that yet.
