Am I crazy or what??
So there's this girl I like(15F), I being 15M, and we've known each other for about 3 years, although we drifted for the 2nd year just with school schedules and other priorities. The first year I got to really know her, I started to like her and at the time, I thought I liked someone else. So I told myself I liked my friend like that because she reminded of the other person. Then we reconnected this past year (after the aforementioned drift) and we got really close. We performed in a musical together and I realized I really liked her. Since last we had been close, the relationship I sort of had stagnated from both her and her parents, but that's not necessarily important.
I told her I liked her about a week after the musical and we had been spending some one-on-one time together. She said she liked me back and was open to see where a relationship took us. For about a month and a couple weeks from then, we were semi-dating, but she got busier and busier with her extracurriculars (she and I both crush ourselves with sheer amount of activities but can't seem to let that stuff go - separate problem) and so we saw less of each other. I ended up telling her how us not seeing each other or talking much felt, and then she seemed to get really depressed. She didn't say she was, but her demeanor was noticably different. One night at a track meet it was at an all-time low since we'd been together and I tried to comfort her throughout the night. When she was leaving with her parents, I asked her for a hug goodbye because she and I agreed previously that we like hugs. Another mention is that we both agreed early on that it wasn't to be anything sexual or physical for the foreseeable future due to her last relationship leaving some trauma in that way. I do find her attractive like that, but it wasn't a desire stronger than my respect for her healing so I agreed.
Now back to the hug: I had asked her and she said she was really tired, so I asked her again in a nicer way and she said she was just really overstimulated at the moment and would rather not. I told her I was glad she was direct and said okay. The next day at school, she said she wanted to talk to me. That was when she told me that she thought it best if we were just friends. She made a point to say it wasn't anything about me, and she wanted to remain friends, just not together. She asked for space over the rest of the day and the next. I initially felt really bad because I thought to myself that she was just trying to let me down easy and I did do something. Something that I thought about was that because the relationship never touched anything suggestive , and we both were so busy, that I stimulated an environment where her attraction was overtaken by stress and she thought that meant she didn't like me anymore.
But then the day after at track practice, she looked so much happier, as if a weight has been lifted and it made me so happy to see her that way again. I made her happy when we were together as in, she really liked me and the things I did, but I think the depression came from a different part of her life or a different aspect of the relationship, like I just touched on. The day after, two days after she friend-zoned me, we had a coed track meet. I was prepared to give her space and not talk to her or anything, but I still care about her so I did ask her if I could still cheer for her. She said she didn't care and that I could. It caught me off guard because the tone she had was one without awkwardness or embarrassment. Then later I was talking to her mom to apologize for the way things turned out and just generally talk too, and she (the girl) looked over at us, then immediately pulled out her phone. I got the drift and told her mom that she probably wanted to talk to her without me there, so I went away while they did that and then ended up talking to her mom again later. After that one time of actually avoiding me, she didn't do it again for the rest of the night. She stood right next to me when a mutual friend was talking to me and then called her over, and she even talked directly to me a few times and seemed fairly comfortable.
That coed was last night, and so far she doesn't seem like she's avoiding me, just not pursuing me which is a relieving clarification. Her friends also apparently talked to her after she broke it off with me, and they said she told them that she really likes my personality and that she really wants to be friends with me. When I asked her why she wanted that, she was a little vague and the most I got was something about preferences. Her friends think it could have been looks, but she's smart and doesn't have the best idea about her own beauty so I don't see it being that. But due to all her stress, the night she declined the hug, her mom told me all her relationships had been struggling because she didn't have time for them and she's also transferring schools next year so definitely a scary time for her.
If she does like me deeply as a person, which she has claimed since the friend-zoning, and she didn't want to lead me on, which she told me, then my current conclusion is that she couldn't devote much to our relationship so she thought she was hurting me and for safety, broke up. The question of the title comes in now as I wrestle with the idea that we could get back together in the future when the time is right for her. I have delved into all kinds of things regarding boundaries so I'm aware of that stuff, and I always have respected her decisions so I will be a friend and nothing more unless she implies something has changed, but am I grasping at straws or what because this is also my first relationship so idk what the heck I'm doing or how accepting to be in this particular situation? TL;DR, is there a legitimate world where I'm onto something and I just need to be her friend and if she wants me again down the line, I make sure to not let her think there are expectations from me and stress her out?
