If West Ham are relegated now, will Sunderland downing tools against Forest and missing Europe still be worth it?
Obviously every club in the Premier League wants Tottenham to get relegated, with teams consistently playing against Tottenham like it's a Cup Final then half-assing it the next week in another game that would still net them 3 points (eg Sunderland v Spurs against Sunderland today)
While it feels a wee bit silly that the other clubs care that much about a team that hasn't won the Premier League this century who aren't even their club's rivals (Sunderland's performance today would have made more sense if it were sending Newcastle down, for example), it's apparent that is in fact what is happening
... but what if it doesn't work?
Sunderland are still in contention for Europe, only 4 points off the Europa League and 3 points off the Conference League. They have a limited window given Granit Xhaka's age and miles, as once he's properly washed, no other player at the club is even close to covering for his current level. It's not even like they have high potential prospects, the best case scenario for their current set of players would be to become Fulham
If Sunderland lose to Forest and Tottenham get relegated, Sunderland fans will be happy as they will perceive their job has been done (as is evidenced by the Sunderland fans celebrating each Forest goal this morning). Not entirely logical - They are a small club themselves and while the losing mentality will doubtless carry over into next season, realistically they didn't have much hope then anyway
But if Tottenham somehow survive the drop and West Ham go down instead, will it really all have been worth it? Is missing out on Europe justified to send down a club that are relatively innocuous? Is keeping Mr Marinakis in the Premier League a good trade-off for missing your best chance for the foreseeable future to have European nights of football?
