How to stop concrete, rigid thinking?
I have an issue with professionals (doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, etc.).
I only bring up information I think is relevant, and what I think is relevant is pretty concrete and literal.
Example: I never think to bring up things like rigid routine, rigid interests, functional impairments, social difficulties, etc., with a therapist or psychiatrist, because in my mind those things are not due to autism (I’m in denial often) and are neither psychological nor psychiatric, and therefore even when asked about those symptoms, the professional must not mean to be asking about those actual symptoms.
I had an severe illness (dysautonomia) for months seemingly from nicotine, and didn’t bring it up with my GP, therapist, or psychiatrist, because in my mind it was from nicotine and therefore not applicable to to any field of those professionals nor would be useful.
Alternatively, I might not realize a question incudes something I’m experiencing. If I think the question is “getting at” something, and I think my own experience does not “get at” what’s being asked, then I exclude it automatically.
The issue is I do it automatically, so I can’t realize when I’m doing it.
