AITAH for wanting to end my friendship because of my friend’s new girlfriend?
Here’s a tightened version that cuts repetition and filler while keeping your wording and details intact as much as possible:
I (M27) will make this clear and give all the details. I hate my best friend’s girlfriend (M28 & F22) and want to know if I’m an asshole. He’s had an awful dating history. In one relationship he was engaged, but she cheated because he didn’t want sex when tired from work. He blamed himself, saying he should’ve been more “mindful” of her needs. His most recent ex threatened to kill him and screamed at him constantly, yet he excused her behavior because of her past.
Now this current relationship with a 22-year-old with two kids. For months he wouldn’t even tell us her name, which is out of character. Around 2–3 months in, we found out he was driving 4 hours to see her and giving her money. He wants a family before 30, which worried us when he said she had kids. He planned to move her to his city while still in school and struggling financially, renting a room with two coworkers. We told him to slow down and think it through, especially for the kids’ sake.
He took out an 8k loan to move himself, her, and a cat into an apartment with no amenities. She left her kids with their dad to “save money” before bringing them later. He told us her ex is abusive and not in their life, which contradicted things we noticed. He also said she’s epileptic and applying for disability.
I told him he’s moving too fast and can’t support a partner and two kids. Around 5–6 months in, I got a text saying she had a miscarriage and that I “can be happy the baby is dead.” I was shocked. He then told me I was trying to control his life and should just listen. After that, I stopped talking to him. He gave his girlfriend my girlfriend’s number and only asked her for advice. She said I was a bad friend for not just listening.
In March, my sister got married. He didn’t come due to “money issues,” but the next week he traveled to celebrate her kid’s birthday. He’s also never met my long-distance girlfriend despite years of trying to set it up.
Now, 8–9 months in, he says he’s struggling. She stays in bed all day, calls him home from work to help feed the kids, and he handles the cat and a dog her mom gave them. She still hasn’t completed disability paperwork. He’s overwhelmed, working and doordashing, and can’t make ends meet.
Am I an asshole for not wanting to be his friend anymore? Am I wrong for calling him out? We tried playing Rivals recently, but she kept yelling for him whenever we got on mic. I haven’t had a real conversation with him in months. I miss the guy who would do dumb things like play Yu-Gi-Oh to decide who buys pizza. Should I cut contact, or what should I do?
