Group text etiquette

Why can people not understand that you should not respond to a group text? Yesterday a friend sent out a group text, 19 people, and asked that people not respond to the group text but instead contact her directly with questions. Within 2 minutes nine of the 19 people had responded to the group text. WTH?? Huge pet peeve for me, what is wrong with people?
