Slow Flow Advice

Troubleshooting/Tips

Hi -

I am doing a combination of breastfeeding and pumping for my 6 week old. After a few weeks of triple feeding due to a weak transfer (~1oz after 30ish mins), he is able to transfer more effectively (~3-5oz after 30-40 mins)1, I have been weighing his feeds with an LC and do have a scale at home, trying to avoid due to anxiety - but had such weight gain problems with my first I can’t help it!

Anyways, I am noticing that both in pumping and with weighted feeds, my milk seems to really get going after the 15 min mark. For weighted feeds, he gets about 1 ounce on one side in 15ish mins, & 2-3 ounces on the second boob, no matter which one. I also observe he is sleepy and slow to start, and in the last 10 mins - he is way more vigorous with lots of swallows.

I have also noticed when pumping, the sprays and letdowns REALLY pick up after the 15 min mark and all my milk comes in the second half.

I feel like for most, it is the opposite and I would really love to support a faster flow. Is this something that improves with time? Or are there strategies I can take to promote faster feeds/pumping sessions? He nurses for 30-45mins each time & I typically pump the full 30 mins for 4-5oz.

Thanks in advance!!
