Is workplace bullying an example of Terror Management Theory?
The late polymath thinker Ernest Becker philosophized on the ancient blood sport of the colosseum thusly;
“For man, maximum excitement is the confrontation of death and the skillful defiance of it by watching others fed to it as he survives transfixed with rapture.”
Terror Management Theory, developed from Becker’s work, holds that death can be symbolic and still breed terror and mortality salience.
In workplaces with high standards and high vigilance, watching a fellow co-worker be fed to the maw of symbolic death could serve as a release. ‘Exaltation of Survivors’, as Becker said.
As a neurodivergent, I was often made a target and I vividly recall the reward signals my bullying co-workers showed: cleanly tooth smiles, cocky struts, and even dirty giggles.
In short, is workplace bullying an example of Beckerian psychology?
