Thoughts on snare heads: Aquarian Focus-X and Evans Genera Dry
What are your thoughts on Aquarian Focus-X and Evans Genera Dry?
There's tons out there about the HD Genera Dry, but not so much about the Genera Dry or the Focus-X. I've never played on either and would appreciate any insights any of you have from your experience with them.
USE CASE
Picked up a used DW 8x14 Performance maple snare. Currently have an Aquarian Texture Coated, Aquarian classic clear reso, and pure sound 20 strand wires. I do use a Tunebot.
Ideal sound is aiming for a medium to medium high tuning for amplified rock music (strat and 60s sounding Nord), good crack, nice ghost notes, thick/warm body...kinda like a black beauty, but warmer with less ring. YouTube videos of this snare are pretty close to the sound I'm after, but they also have tons of EQ.
I've never owned a wood snare, nor an 8x14 and still futzing with dialing in the sound I'm chasing. Half a moon gel is killing more resonance than I'd like. Not sure if the genera dry or Focus-X would be the sweet spot or still too much dampening.
Have only played on a B.O.B. for the last 15 years or so.
Also, I hate dots and reverse dots. I just don't like the lack of rebound on the dot and tonal difference between playing off the dot and on.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
