Headless CMS explained: why it's better than traditional CMS / Shopify (with microfrontends, BFF & CaaS)

Hey everyone,

Let's settle this once and for all.

Why would anyone ditch WordPress or Shopify for a headless CMS?

Here's my take πŸ‘‡

1/ Traditional CMS (WordPress, Drupal, etc.)

🧠 The "head" (frontend) and "body" (backend) are glued together.

πŸ” Want to reuse content in a mobile app or a kiosk? Painful hacks or plugins.

βœ… Headless decouples everything. One backend β†’ infinite frontends via API.

πŸš€ Better for: omnichannel, performance, dev freedom.

2/ All-in-one ecommerce (Shopify, Wix, Squarespace)

⚑ Super fast to start.

πŸ”’ But you lose flexibility (checkout, custom logic, legacy systems).

βœ… Headless solution: keep Shopify as backend, build your own frontend with their Storefront API.

⚠️ Warning: more dev work upfront. Great for teams, overkill for solo founders.

3/ Microfrontends

Instead of one massive frontend, split it into small apps:

Β· Product page = React team

Β· Checkout = Vue team

Β· Blog = plain HTML

🧩 Headless CMS feeds content to ALL of them via the same API.

No framework fights. No single point of failure.

4/ Backend for Frontend (BFF)

Headless gives you raw data – sometimes too raw.

πŸ› οΈ BFF is a thin layer between CMS and frontend that:

Β· Merges data from CMS + inventory + pricing

Β· Shapes responses for mobile vs desktop

Β· Handles auth & caching

BFF makes headless production-ready without bloating your frontend.

5/ CaaS – Content as a Service

Fancy name, simple idea:

Instead of "installing a CMS", you subscribe to a content API.

πŸ“¦ Examples: Contentful, Sanity, Strapi (self-hosted).

Old way: "I manage content in a dashboard."

CaaS way: "I manage content once, serve it everywhere."

When NOT to go headless

❌ Simple blog or small brochure site β†’ stick with traditional CMS

❌ Solo founder with zero dev support β†’ keep normal Shopify

❌ Your team hates APIs and hosting β†’ all-in-one is fine

Final take

🧠 Headless + microfrontends + BFF = future-proof content architecture.

☁️ CaaS = API-first mindset.

But remember: complexity is a tax.

Choose headless only when you truly need omnichannel freedom.

What's your stack? Contentful? Strapi? Headless Shopify?
