New, used, beater? practical vs enjoyable vs long-term value
Looking for honest outside advice because I keep going back and forth on what the smartest move is for my next vehicle.
Currently leasing a Tesla Model S Performance, but planning to turn it in instead of buying it out since the residual is higher than market value.
My wife will definitely be getting a new family vehicle in about 2 years when her lease is up, so getting something big right now isn’t necessary — just preferred.
I can afford all the options I’m considering, so this is less about whether I can buy them and more about whether the extra money is truly worth it or if I’d rather keep more cash available for other priorities.
If I buy new, I’d prefer something I genuinely enjoy and would want to keep at least 5–7 years. Used market still feels tough right now because prices are inflated, and while a beater sounds smart short term (maybe 2–3 years), unexpected maintenance is what concerns me. I’m not trying to buy something just for appearances — I just want something I’ll actually enjoy owning. I understand these are all completely different options, just curious which way you’d go.
Current options I keep bouncing between:
- New Toyota Camry LE
- New Tesla Model Y
- Used / newer Toyota 4Runner (5th gen, ideally 4WD)
- F-150 / truck route
- Used beater option (~15k Toyota/Honda)
- Open to other options too if I’m overlooking something
A little context:
- Married, one child, likely another in the future, plus 2 dogs
- 6’4 so comfort matters
- Drive about 60 miles a day
- Just bought a new home
- Would prefer a bigger vehicle overall, but not necessary
- Would definitely do off-roading
- Don’t need a truck bed for work, but it would be convenient and fun for my lifestyle
- Reliability matters a lot
- I care about resale and long-term value, especially if this ends up being shorter term
- Prefer to stay under $55k
What keeps pulling me different directions:
The Camry feels like the safest financial move, but I could also see myself getting bored in 2–3 years and wanting something else.
The Model Y feels like the most enjoyable daily driver and cheapest to run. Coming from Tesla already, it’s comfortable and familiar — but EV depreciation and insurance costs are hard to ignore.
The 4Runner feels like something I’d genuinely enjoy long term because it holds value extremely well and fits the bigger vehicle / off-road side of what I want, plus it works well for the dogs — but fuel costs obviously add up.
A truck seems practical for my lifestyle, but I’m not sure I’d use the bed enough to justify choosing it over an SUV.
What I’m really trying to balance is making a financially responsible decision without buying something so practical that I regret it immediately.
Since I just bought a home, part of me wants to stay disciplined, keep extra capital available, pay down mortgage faster, invest more into my business, and keep freedom in lifestyle.
So the real question is: would you buy cheap and reliable right now for flexibility, or buy new and commit to something you actually enjoy long term?
If you were in my position, what would you choose and why?
