Capitalizing on Community Hype: A Lesson from "Glitches"

Suggestion

My journey with The Division 2 began in October 2024. Within weeks, my friend and I experienced our first 5X XP event, and I was instantly hooked. The grind was so addictive I actually took time off work to maximize my gains. Our initial goal was hitting 2,000 SHD to begin managing "mules" for optimization resources, focusing heavily on Proficiency and the Library through Countdown and Kenly College.

Eventually, we neared the 4,000 SHD mark and leaned heavily into mule creation, running Lincoln Memorial more times than I can count. When the developers announced the unification of the SHD watch—effectively destroying our ability to make mules—it triggered the community in mass to work together, join Discords in the hundreds. This represented the peak of my experience; the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose, new friends turned a looter-shooter into a true community.

However, a pattern has emerged. Whether it was the 999 Exotic farm, the infinite stretch goal caches, or the Shepard event, the community surges during these high-reward moments and then they all "slither away" once things are patched.

History repeated itself three days ago with the "Infinite Ronin" glitch. Once again, servers were packed, discords are at capacity, matchmaking was instant, and my friends list was glowing green with online agents. Then came the 3:00 AM patch on April 23rd, and the momentum vanished.

Ubisoft needs to recognize that sometimes you have to "give away the pickle to sell the sandwich." High-reward glitches create buzz, and buzz drives sales and player activity. Instead of a hard patch that kills the hype, consider a compromise that stabilizes the game while keeping the engagement.

Regarding the Sakura Keys, the current loot pool is underwhelming. If you want to drive revenue, consider a tiered, targeted key system:

  • Dev standardized loot pool, I would recommend only including items that you can’t get from the loot goblin any other time. Lexington, Turmoil and Quickstep are great, the rest are underwhelming. No one uses the Oh Carol.
  • A Few Final Request:
  • Please allow us to optimize Prototype Gear: I cannot risk losing a talent on my gear without the ability to fix it.
  • Please allow us to optimize gear and weapon MODS: After 1,000 hours, I have never seen a 13% PFE mod. For completionist and OCD players, having anything less than a perfect mod is infuriating.
    • Make it expensive
    • Gate it behind Level 30 requirements in order to add it to a gear piece to prevent abuse, but please give us a reliable path to perfecting our builds.

The community is at its best when the rewards match the effort. I hope you’ll consider these suggestions.
