How do you stop the Italians as France?!

I did a 3rd attempt at France without capitulation and i almost won as democratic France but the Italians joined the axis and basically turned the tide to where i was easily defeated. i even had a bunch of men to protect the Italian border just in case and When Italy joined i had them surrounded but they were able to breakthrough and incircle me to death.
