16F in 1yr relationship with 18M—feeling smothered by his clinginess and immaturity. Fair to ask him to change?

Short

Throwaway. I’m 16F and my boyfriend is 18M—we’ve been together a bit over a year. He’s sweet and we get along, but I’m feeling overwhelmed and unsure if we’re compatible.

He’s a big pushover with his family, never stands up for himself, and has almost no friends. His life is just school, sports, me, and family. He’s also very clingy and talks constantly about serious future stuff like kids and moving in together, which feels way too much for teenagers.

I can’t bring this up now because he’s in the middle of major final exams. I don’t want to stress him out and risk him failing, but I know I need to talk to him soon after.

• Is it fair to ask him to change things like being less of a pushover, making friends, and scaling back the future‑talk? Or is this more of a sign we’re incompatible long‑term?

• If I do talk to him, how do I say it gently so he doesn’t feel attacked or spiral?

TIA for honest advice.
