Question about shortening 5W shaft

I am currently running the Project X Denali Red shaft in my Driver,7W, and 5H for the last year and I love . I bought a new 5w that is a G440 max with the Alta CB shaft. That shaft is 41.75 with the Ping adapter tip. My friend has a Denali Red Fairway shaft with the Ping adapter that he doesnt need. Its exactly the weight and stiffness spec that I want, but its 42.25 length with the adapter installed, basically a half inch longer.

If I wanted to cut it down, can I cut on the butt end, or I have been reading tipping is a optin as well. I can cut the butt myself, but would need someone else to do the tipping. Love any suggestions.
