Is this normal?

I recently was told to wear triangles on each side full time. A few days after, I removed my bands to eat and I realized I couldn’t open my mouth wide enough to even bite down on it. I kept trying to open my mouth wider but it felt like my jaw was locked somehow and I started having extreme jaw pain the next day. Is this normal?

To add, I called my ortho place and they told me to just take the bands off when I eat. but i was already doing that so im thinking this is just normal soreness that’s really bad?
