i tried to build my AI context system on top of notion and gave up after two months. here's why, and what i'd love notion to add

:api: API / Integrations

was using notion as my "second brain" for years. when i started building a context-loading layer for AI tools, notion was the obvious place to put it. structured docs, databases, relations, exactly the right primitives. i spent two months trying to make it work and eventually killed the direction.

the reasons it didn't work, in case anyone is going down the same path.

sync semantics. notion's sync is great for human-to-human collaboration but bad for "i need the absolute current state of this doc right now to inject into a model query." the API has rate limits. webhooks are inconsistent. there's no clean way to know if the version you're seeing is the latest. for a system where stale context = wrong AI output, that ambiguity was fatal.

structure rigidity. notion's database model is great for things you've already structured, bad for the messy in-flight notes that are usually the most relevant context to load. i kept ending up with two parallel systems: a "clean" notion database for stuff i'd processed, and a separate mess of pages for stuff i was still thinking about. injecting from the database alone gave the AI stale context. injecting from the messy pages was unmaintainable.

write-back. the AI sometimes generates a decision or summary i want to capture back into my notion. doing that programmatically through the API is doable but fragile. i'd update something, the user would be in the middle of editing the same block, and we'd race condition each other.

what i ended up doing is moving the context vault to local files on the user's machine. the filesystem is the source of truth, edits are instant, no sync layer. the trade-off is you lose the cross-device collaboration that notion gives you for free, which matters less than i thought for single-user AI workflows.

what i'd love notion to add: a "stable read" API that gives a deterministic snapshot, with a version number, that doesn't race against in-flight edits. or honestly even just a "this page is meant to be machine-read, treat it differently" flag. the surface area is there, it's just not exposed cleanly for AI consumption.

(small mac overlay i ended up building, link in profile, beta open if curious. but i'm mostly here to ask if anyone has actually made notion work as an AI context source in production. genuinely curious if i missed an angle.)
