After almost 20 years selling on the Peninsula, I kept getting the same questions, so I built a sub for them
I'm Brian. I'm a Realtor in downtown Charleston, almost 20 years on the Peninsula.
Here's the thing that finally pushed me to start r/CharlestonLife: I kept getting the same questions, year after year, from buyers, from sellers, from neighbors, from people who'd just moved here and from people thinking about it. Will my street flood? How bad? What's the BAR going to let me do to this house? Can I short-term rent it? Why is parking on my own block somehow illegal? Is 29401 actually different from 29403, or is that just realtor talk?
r/Charleston exists, and it's a great sub, but it covers everything from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant to Folly. Downtown has its own gravity. Flooding hits different here. The BAR is its own world. The rental rules change by the block. The conversations downtown residents need to have don't always land in a sub that's also fielding "best brunch in Park Circle."
So I started r/CharlestonLife as the Peninsula-specific spot. 29401 and 29403. Historic homes, BAR fights, king tides, parking permits, neighborhood quirks, the actual realities of living downtown.
If you live on the Peninsula, are thinking about a move here, or just want the ground-truth version instead of the postcard version, come join us.r/CharlestonLife
