Theory: Koby used Conquerors Haki in Marineford
I've been rereading the one piece manga and noticed this moment.
Koby has always been a polarizing character for scaling, but after seeing this moment again I’m convinced Oda gave us the answer to his peak potential all the way back then. Most people see Koby’s "seconds of courage" as just a brave emotional moment, but if you look at the art and the narrative parallels, there’s a strong case that Koby unleashed Conquerors Haki in Chapter 579.
To me, it feels like Oda has been using "delayed gratification" with Koby. Keeping most of his feats off-screen for years specifically to save the hype for the Hachinosu payoff.
Visuals, Framing, and Effects: Oda used the exact same blueprint for Koby that he used for Luffy’s confirmed Conquerors breakout just 10 chapters prior. Notice the framing in Chapter 579 compared to Luffy’s moment in 569When Luffy roars, we see a "Thoong" and "Zang" effect. When Koby screams, we get a massive "Wooosh" and "Zing". Despite the different sounds, both instances share a similar effect in the reaction panels.
The Ripple: Look at the speed lines radiating through the panels. They are ripples passing over the onlookers. In both instances, it’s a visual representation of a presence hitting the environment.
Reaction Gallery:
We also have to look at how the world reacted. A normal human voice, no matter how loud, doesn't make top-tiers freeze mid-action.
Consider Vivi in Alabasta. She was screaming at the top of her lungs from the clock tower, yet the fighting didn't even slow down. You could argue proximity played a role, but the distance from the Marineford plaza to the shore isn't significantly different. In a chaotic, bloodthirsty war, a single voice shouldn't be able to halt thousands of soldiers. We saw that in Alabasta. Yet, in Marineford, Koby’s plea actually froze the battlefield. Both characters were pleading for the same thing, but only one had the 'Will' to make the world stop and listen, even for a moment.
Yet, admirals Akainu and Kizaru, along with Marco and Law, all have "?" reaction bubbles. I have a hard time believing that they would stop just because someone yelled on a raging battlefied. It would make more sense that they felt a sudden pressure.
People often argue that the marines passing out are just Koby's POV of people dying on the battlefield, but that’s a cop-out. If you compare Luffys moment just 10 chapters prior, you can see a similar pattern. Commanding roar->onlookers reaction->fainting. The only difference between the two moments is that for Luffy someone explicitly said it was conquerors haki. But for two moments that parallel each other in so many ways and have similar results is it really too hard to read between the lines?
The Hachinosu Moment: 3-4 Weeks of Attrition
The events at Hachinosu serve as the payoff for this Marineford setup. A lot of people see Koby’s initial struggle(WHY CAN'T HE BREAK A STELL BALL?) as a sign of weakness, but the timeline suggests he was severely nerfed. I’ve looked at the timeline, and Koby was likely imprisoned for 2.5 to 4 weeks.
- Reasoning: Koby’s chat with Drake (Chapter 956) happens one week after the Reverie. In that call, Drake mentions that the situation with Luffy is "stagnant" and there’s no news of a breakout meaning Luffy was still imprisoned in Udon. At this point Koby was already on the shore of Amazon Lily.
- Window: Since the Wano raid didn't happen for another week (at least), the Straw Hats rested for another week or two after the battle with Kaido, and the rescue happens at the same time as the Egghead news, that puts Koby in the Blackbeard Pirates dungeon for nearly a month before Garp and SWORD show up.
Luffy is a prime example of how important food is in this series. He literally has to stuff his face just to perform after a transformation. To perform Honesty Impact, a feat that shattered an island-sized limb, while being malnourished and exhausted for that long is insane. That isn't Koby at 100%. If he can output that level of destruction while depleted, his "fresh" state is easily higher.
Final Thoughts
Oda has been very careful with Koby. By off-screening most of his post-timeskip growth, he avoided giving us any feats and saved the impact for the Hachinosu reveal. If we accept that the moment at Marineford was a Conquerors Haki awakening, then Koby has had over two years of Garp’s training to refine it.
TL;DR: Koby’s Marineford roar used the exact same visual cues as Luffy’s Conquerors Haki. Combined with his island-level feat at Hachinosu despite a month of imprisonment, we should reconsider his current position power wise.
