Building a rounder, higher glute shelf is all about strategy rather than just lifting heavy. To get that specific look, you have to move beyond basic squats and focus on the muscles that sit at the very top of your hip.

By following these specific steps, you can change the shape of your glutes and create a more lifted appearance.

# Target the Gluteus Medius

The secret to the shelf is the gluteus medius. This muscle sits on the upper outer side of your pelvis. When this muscle grows, it creates the fullness at the top of the butt that people call the shelf. Exercises that involve pushing your legs out to the side are the best way to hit this area. Movements like lateral cable kicks or seated abduction machines are perfect because they keep the tension right where you want it.

# Focus on the Shortened Position

Muscles grow differently depending on when the exercise is hardest. For the upper glute shelf, you want exercises that are hardest at the top of the movement. This is called the shortened position. When you do a hip thrust or a glute bridge, your glutes are under the most pressure when your hips are locked out and squeezed. Holding that squeeze for two seconds on every rep will signal your body to build more muscle density in that upper region.

# Prioritize Mind-Muscle Connection

It is very easy for your lower back or hamstrings to take over during glute workouts. If you don't feel the burn in your upper hips, you probably aren't growing the shelf. Before you start your heavy lifting, try doing a few light sets of fire hydrants or side-lying leg raises. This wakes up the nerves in the glutes so that when you move to heavier weights, your brain knows exactly which muscle to use.

# Eat Enough to Build

You can't shape a muscle that isn't there. Many people fail to see a glute shelf because they are eating in a calorie deficit. To build new muscle tissue, your body needs extra energy and plenty of protein. Think of protein as the bricks and your workout as the construction crew. Without the bricks, the crew can't build the shelf no matter how hard they work.

# Be Patient with Progress

Muscle growth takes time, especially in a specific area like the upper glutes. Most people start to see a physical change in their shape after about six to eight weeks of consistent training. Stick to a routine that hits these muscles at least twice a week and keep track of your weights. If you are getting stronger in your lifts, your glutes are definitely growing.
