I’ll see you in another life, when we are both cats.

This is random, but something like 5/6 years ago I dated this girl for a year. We loved each other but I don’t think either of us understood or were ready for what came with a relationship, we were each other’s first partner, thus leading to a nasty toxic break up.

She went to college, I stayed home while doing school/work. We were riddled with anxiety while she was gone and it blew shit up slowly over time. I saw it coming from a distance, I was panicking trying to make it work. Fucked myself in the long run. I don’t remember too many details outside of that, a lot of life has happened since. A few relationships, a near death experience in the hospital, new jobs, time has a funny way of healing wounds. I remember thinking it was going to be the end of my world when it happened, everything came crashing down. I picked myself up and created a strong life for myself, I also have a beautiful girlfriend who just gets me, we both understand each other and it’s amazing. I don’t give the ex relationship any thought anymore, I use that time as a lesson on what not to repeat for my current girl.

I do remember the breakup though, and the last thing she said to me. “In another life, when we are both cats”. Man that hit me like a freight truck. I was sitting there in tears just staring at it. Wrecked me. After that all went down I decided to pick my head up and look forward, but I could not get that line out of my head. As with all things, over time it faded. Fast forward 5 years later and I’m watching a movie called Vanilla Sky. Never seen it but I loved it, Tom cruise is one of my favorite actors (Scientology BS aside). In the movie, the lead actress tells him “in another life, when we are both cats” and my world got flipped upside down. Here I am this whole time thinking she pulled that out of her ass and dropped the bar of all bars on me, the mic drop of all mic drops.

I think it was the closure I never got honestly. It hit me right there what exactly that quote meant. I’ve never felt those emotions before, it was sad and freeing.

She was a smart young woman, great work ethic. I haven’t spoken to her since we broke up, it was a nasty, played out break up, I have no desire to talk or reconnect, my life is great right now and I don’t need to shift the vibes of it. I thought about apologizing for how everything went down, but I don’t think it’s appropriate anymore. I like to believe she’s happy and thriving in her own world, and understands we were just kids trying to figure it out.
