Dont know if I just dated an avoidant
My ex was the best man I’ve ever known. Throughout our year long relationship he was so kind supportive, but one thing he would lack was communication or seeing the signs of my despair. I started becoming more anxious about small changes in our relationship. We used to spend months living with each other until he told me all of a sudden that we can’t do that anymore. I didn’t get an explanation from him, he just said it’s not normal. He was religious and wanted to get married with kids and the traditional life. He was so occupied by work. I stopped communicating too because it was always turning back at me. This is when we used to argue. Otherwise he was very open to listening and implementing changes. Hes been through a lot of trauma in his life. I used to beg him to let me in so we can work on our relationship. He thought it was fine.
We broke up because my anxiety got the better of me. I did a lot of thinking and realised I was very anxious. I reached out and he said we’re only going to hurt each other. I asked to meet in person and he said the same. I started sobbing and then he asked what I want for my future and told me his five year plan on whether I’m aligned. I said yes. He talked to his family then another dealbreaker came up. I said no. Then we were about to break up again but he suggested we keep the communication going (probably to keep me around?). I agreed thinking he would change his dealbreaker because I was open that I’m not aligned with it. We spent 2-3 weeks talking about the rest of our future together.
One night in my anxious state I asked him what we’re doing and whether he’s changed his dealbreaker. He said no. I said then you have to accept me the way I am. He said he can’t change it and he has a tunnel vision of what his future looks like. In the middle of our conversation at 4am he left my house saying “I can’t listen to more of this it’s killing my heart”. I texted him that he shouldn’t have walked out on me. He said he’s walking out on himself. He broke up with me on text the next day. I asked him to call me and he said the same thing, that it’s becoming toxic.
Few days later I genuinely changed my mind about the dealbreaker. He said we can’t keep going in circles and that he’s focused on moving on with his life and that he can’t have this effect on me. He blocked me.
I am at a loss. I know we both had issues. But I was really fighting for our relationship. He was not communicating and I was over communicating. I’m confused on whether he’s avoidant. He couldn’t handle big heavy conversations. I don’t know why he blocked me, maybe in fear that I would convince him again. All he wanted was for me to be aligned on the future with him, and I was. Then the dealbreaker came up. Then other small things here and there he would bring up. I even asked him why he didn’t mention these before. He said he didn’t know.
I’m so confused
