Someone visited my island and made a comment about my layout and I've been rearranging things for two weeks
She didn't say anything mean, that's the part I keep coming back to. She walked around for maybe twenty minutes, said it was cute, and then mentioned that my residential area felt a little cramped and asked if I'd considered moving some of the houses closer to the water. That was the whole comment. Cute and cramped and a suggestion I didn't ask for, delivered in the completely casual way people say things when they don't know they've just rearranged your entire relationship with something you've spent two years building. I said yeah maybe and changed the subject and after she left I stood in the middle of my plaza and looked around and couldn't unsee it.
I've been playing this island since the game came out and I know every corner of it in the specific way you know a place you've spent real time in. I was playing on my phone the night after she visited, half watching something, and kept picking up my switch and moving one thing and then another and telling myself I was just experimenting. Two weeks later I have some money saved up in bells that I've been spending on infrastructure changes that I'm not totally sure I like yet, three villagers have new plots, and my museum looks different from every angle I used to like looking at it from. I don't know if the island is better. I genuinely cannot tell anymore because I've looked at it too many times in the last fourteen days to have any perspective left.
The thing that gets me is that I loved my layout before she said anything. Not in a defensive way, just genuinely, I had reasons for everything and the cramped residential area was intentional because I liked how it felt walking through it. Now I can't remember what it felt like to walk through it without hearing the word cramped in the back of my head. I'm not even annoyed at her, she was just talking, but I think I handed someone else's casual opinion more authority over my own island than my own two years of decisions and I'm not sure how to take that back without just starting over, which I'm not doing, I already did that once and I know how that goes.
