PMDD in an Echo Chamber: Social Media and AI
I'm new here, my fiance (whom I promise you, I ADORE) is not yet diagnosed, but it could not be more clear to me that her symptoms are screaming the diagnosis. She is currently in what she has already listed on the calendar as "Bad Days" and I imagine we all know she is not currently open to the conversation.
In the meantime, I did want to start a conversation with this subreddit, regarding the echo chambers that our partners find themselves in on Social Media and in AI Chats.
There is an algorithmic incentive for organizations, a marketing incentive for "TikTok therapist" influencers, and a market capture incentive for AI Chats to provide these positive feedback loops. Our partner's are so desperate to find reason for their distress and validation for their emotional dysregulation, that they are VERY highly susceptible to them.
AI is operating at a MASSIVE financial loss to glaze you with it's responses in hopes of getting you hooked and capturing maximum market share (before raising the prices to the realistic, and what I project as a programmer, to be explosively cost-prohibitive entry pricing). Our partner's turning to AI for therapy are going to get their ego boosted all the way to our collective ruin.
I have woken up to my bed-absent insomnia-induced partner sending me ELEVEN Instagram reels designed to hold me to the flames for not apologizing correctly, for not validating and approaching her emotional dysregulation with "curiosity" and a myriad of other targets and justifications for her rage and frustrations, which, within the realm of reason, COULD be realistic grievances. With PMDD, what I see is an addict tethered to a slot machine handle, getting a desperate hit of dopamine to make the pain stop for just one more brief and unsustainable moment. The grievance is then labeled and stored for recall for the next episode, and whether expressed or not, seeps its way into every other argument, making it impossible to resolve anything.
It has even reached the point where these reels in our DMs are echoing into my algorithms. What's really interesting is how COUNTER arguments to these reels are entering my algorithm, in an attempt to draw us into disagreements and fuel engagement --which is deeply, DEEPLY toxic. Some of these counter arguments are steeped in toxic masculinity, are objectively BAD advice, and I now get ads for "alpha male retreats" (which I personally could not find more pathetic and predatory).
Our kids are in deep trouble and we should all be talking to them about this, a lot.
Anyway.. I'm new here, and I'm wondering what you have noticed... how you navigate and address these things.. Obviously, when the Good Days are back.
Thanks for reading, and good luck out there!
