Follow up to Neuro-Psych evaluation today

I am the DPOA for a very dear friend with vascular dementia following a stroke. She had a neuro-psych evaluation and this is the follow up. She has extreme Anosognosia. She believes, no, she KNOWS she is fine. The evaluation found extreme deficits and stated she was not safe living alone. She believes she is getting an all clear to return home today. She is so excited. I’ve been trying to inject some reality but she isn’t having it.

The PCP is wonderful and she and I have talked privately about this appointment. I have warned her about the expectation level. I have another friend coming to the appointment with us for extra moral support. Recently we had a visit to the optometrist who explained that the stroke has given her left hemisphere peripheral blindness. She told him how that shouldn’t affect her ability to drive and he needed to sign something so she can get her license back. He told her absolutely not, he couldn’t do that. She left the office convinced the license reinstatement was a done deal and has asked me every day since if her new license has come in the mail yet.

Her PCP is truly wonderful with her. Our plan is to honestly answer her questions and concerns and for the doctor to be the one giving all the bad news. She does have to stay in MC as long as the deficits exist. My stance is, if she’s right and this is all temporary, she can go home. We just need the doctor’s orders to make it happen. Wish me luck! It’s going to be brutal!
