when your ai tool starts burning credits on tiny changes, it’s usually this
seeing a bunch of people hit this lately with builder style tools
one week a small css tweak costs basically nothing next week you change a button radius and it eats 3 to 4 credits like it just rebuilt the whole app
most of the time it’s not the button it’s the context you’re carrying around
as your project grows, every “simple change” gets interpreted as “make this consistent everywhere” and the model starts touching way more files than you expected styles bleed into components components bleed into screens screens have edge cases you forgot you added at 2am
a few things that tend to spike credit usage
1 you’re asking in a way that invites a refactor stuff like “clean this up” “make it nicer” “match the rest of the app” sounds small but it opens the door to broad edits if you want cheap, be annoyingly specific like “only change the padding on the primary button in this one component”
2 your last few changes left the codebase in a weird state duplicate components half migrated styling system a mix of inline styles and a theme file then the model has to spend tokens just figuring out what the source of truth is before it can do the change
3 you’re not pinning the scope if the tool supports it, point it at the exact file or component if it doesn’t, paste the relevant snippet and say do not touch anything else it feels dumb but it saves you from the model going on a little tour of your repo
4 you’re in a loop where it keeps “fixing” what it broke this is the silent killer one change introduces a layout bug next prompt fixes the bug but changes something else now you’re paying credits to chase your own tail when that starts happening, i usually stop and do a reset prompt something like “summarize what changed in the last 3 steps and what files were touched” if the summary looks messy, roll back and redo the change with tighter instructions
also on the promo stuff like “credits go further until x date” i’ve learned to treat that as “model routing changed” not “you will definitely spend less” sometimes you get a cheaper model for the same prompt sometimes you get a smarter model that does more work because it can
curious if anyone else noticed the same pattern when your credits started spiking, was it after the project got bigger, or after a model switch
