Santa Cruz Chameleon vs Specialized Chisel FS for getting back into MTB?

Question

Hey guys,

I’m trying to get back into cycling / MTB and I’m stuck between two bikes:

- Santa Cruz Chameleon R 29 — around €2,000

- Specialized Chisel Comp FS — around €2,500

Both are new.

Context:

I used to ride MTB years ago, before university and work happened. I had a Cube AMS 120 HPA 2014, then later a YT Capra with high-end parts.

The Capra was fun, but it was second-hand, expensive to maintain, and I had some headaches with suspension/service. Mechanics refused to service Kashima parts :)

And climbing was a nightmare. I sold it last year due to inactivity and now I want something new. The Cube was exceptional; my father still rides it to this day.

I live near a forest area with climbs and mixed trails. A normal ride would include some asphalt to reach the forest, then forest roads, XC-ish trails, roots, rocks, some steeper wooded sections and a few rougher descents. The climb up to the higher area is not alpine, but enough to hurt when you’re out of shape roughly 400–550 m elevation gain depending on the loop, with the high point around 830 m.

My goals:

- get back into riding

- build cardio

- have fun after work, since I work from home, and on weekends

- maybe get a road bike later for pure cardio/asphalt/group rides

That last point is important. Part of me thinks: get the Chameleon now as the fun forest/trail hardtail, then later get a road bike for fitness and group rides. That way the two bikes have very different roles.

But the Chisel is tempting because it’s only about €500 more and gives me full suspension, a SID fork, better comfort, and probably more confidence since I’ve mostly ridden full-suspension bikes before. I’m a bit afraid I might regret going back to a hardtail when the trail gets rough, although I’m young and I do like the adrenaline.

On the other hand, the Chameleon is simpler, cheaper long-term, probably easier to maintain, looks amazing, and seems more timeless. The Chisel is objectively better value/performance, but it adds FS maintenance and the brakes might need upgrading later.

I can’t test ride either bike… nor other models.. in my area.

I would basically have to order one from a shop and hope I made the right choice.

So the real question:

For someone getting back into MTB, riding mixed forest/XC/trail terrain, with a possible road bike planned later, would you pick the Santa Cruz Chameleon or the Specialized Chisel Comp FS?

Would the Chameleon be the smarter long-term/fun bike, or is the Chisel FS too good of a deal to pass up?

Curious especially about climbing feel, descending confidence, long-term ownership, resale value, maintenance costs, and whether trail hardtail + future road bike makes more sense than XC full suspension now.
