The Jagannath Temple was built in the 12th century, about 65 meters tall, an example of Kalinga-style architecture. Standing by the seashore, this temple is as grand as it is known for its “mysteries.”

Four things are heard again and again:

• The flag flutters against the wind.

• Above the temple, the sound of the sea cannot be heard.

• The temple’s shadow is not visible.

• The prasad never runs short.

All of this gets wrapped into a single word — “miracle.” But explanations exist everywhere.

🚩 Flag

The temple’s height (about 65 meters) and complex structure don’t allow the wind to flow straight. The Kármán vortex street, temperature differences, and the angle of the flagpole together can make the flag appear “reversed.” There is no certified 24-hour record proving that it always happens like this.

🌊 Sound of the sea

The height, direction, and structure of the temple walls block and scatter sound waves. This is an effect of acoustic engineering.

👤 Shadow

Because of the complex structure and multiple projections, the shadow does not appear clearly. This is the result of geometry and the angle of light.

🧆 Prasad

A layered cooking system, years of experience, and accurate estimation of demand. This is supply management and the precision of a system.

In 2025-26, a kite was seen above the temple. During a storm it flew carrying a flag-like cloth, then sat on the Neelchakra. The chief priest Shri Ramkrishna Das Mahapatra clearly said: “This is a natural phenomenon, not supernatural.”

But on social media it was linked to the Bhavishya Malika of the 1400s and called an “omen of disaster.”

Lokdharmic logic

Ratna Bhandar

After the 1978 inventory, it remained closed for 48 years. The keys were missing. It had to be opened by cutting the lock. 454 gold items (128.38 kg) and 293 silver items were found.

What 48 years of faith could not do, some party’s electoral pressure did in one year.

Trinity College Hartford survey

Among 1,100 scientists from 130 institutions, 38% agreed that God performs miracles. 67% considered it appropriate to take Tirupati’s blessings before a rocket launch.

Pew Research 2021

Among college-educated Hindus, 73% believe that the Ganga washes away sins.

This is not only a matter of the less educated.

⭐ AP Framework's Take

First, “miracle” is not an answer to a question; it is a way to shut questions down.

Once you say, “It’s a miracle,” you have your answer to “why?” There is no need to ask “how?” The question “who did it?” itself becomes wrong.

The same happened with the Ratna Bhandar. There was a label of “divine protection,” so for 48 years no one asked where the key had gone. When electoral pressure came, the lock was cut. “Divine protection” disappeared overnight.

That is exactly the job of the ego — to end the need to ask questions. And when the need ends, responsibility ends too.

Second, “miracle” makes ancient engineers invisible. People in the 12th century built a 65-meter-tall temple, did acoustic engineering, calculated shadow angles, created a convection-based kitchen. All of this was design, not accident.

They thought of something that even a thousand years later seems “supernatural” to people. Saying “God did it” gives no credit to that human intelligence; it becomes invisible.

Third, the ego doesn’t ignore facts; it doesn’t even listen to them. The temple administration said “it’s natural,” but no one listened. Aerodynamics is documented, but no one reads it. Out of 1,100 scientists, 38% still believe in miracles.

This is not ignorance. Ignorance is when no explanation exists. Here, explanations exist: the priest said it, physics explained it, the survey documented it. Yet it was still not heard.

Because the “miracle” label is a convenience. When the label is in place, you don’t have to look for the key, you don’t have to study aerodynamics, and you don’t have to accept that some person in the 12th century thought of something we cannot think of today.

Saying “miracle” is easy. Asking questions feels uncomfortable to the ego.

One must ask — “How do you know?”
