I installed hinge lights in my kitchen cabinets and honestly cannot believe this was not standard from the beginning.

This is one of those upgrades that is so simple and obvious that I am annoyed and regret that why I did not do it years ago.

Background: My kitchen has overhead cabinets and I could never see inside them properly when they were open. The overhead ceiling light creates shadows inside the cabinet. And I have to use my phone torch to look for things.

Tried battery stick-on lights inside and they were terrible - dim, ran out of batteries, fell off in monsoon humidity.

Then I found out that "hinge lights" are an actual product category.

These are cabinet hinges with an integrated LED. They replace your standard cabinet hinges. When the door opens past a certain angle, the hinge activates the LED. When the door closes, it switches off.

So the light source is literally inside the hinge mechanism. There is nothing to mount on inside the cabinet. No sensor box, no strips and no wiring visible.

The light comes from the hinge itself and illuminates the shelf interior perfectly.

I replaced 4 hinges on 2 cabinet doors. The installation was exactly the same as replacing any hinge - same screws and same holes.

Now every time I open a cabinet lights inside it switches ON immediately and I can see everything on the shelves clearly. And when closing, the light turns off. No batteries and no maintenance.

I have been overthinking kitchen cabinet lighting for two years and the answer was this simple.
