Town and Colony House

In season 1, the Matthews went through a choosing ceremony where they had to decide if they wanted to be part of Colony House, or part of the Town. It was made to be a big deal at the time, a final and unchangeable choice. But they've been playing around it for quite a lot and it doesn't seem to actually be an important thing?
