Account opening video KYC: friend got pushed insurance/deposit. How do you handle bank upselling?

Other

It was for kotak 811 account, and after the KYC was done, the staff kept upselling - first their insurance, then an RD (i think).

My friend isn’t very familiar with such situations and felt pressured on the call. It reminded me how often banks try to cross‑sell things at the exact moment you’re already committed to something simple like an account or KYC.

My takeaway: It is safer to never sign up for any financial product/service (or anything that involves money) on a live call. Just say “I’ll think about it and decide later.” I have come to learn that most upsells have better alternatives.

  1. Is this kind of upselling during KYC standard practice with Kotak/other banks? This was zero-balance account, so it's understandable.
  2. Any other tips from the pros here? I am sure it happens not just on video calls, but also at car dealerships, etc. I have experienced that myself just last week.
