Saved Trees – A Happy and Proud Moment.
Today is a day I truly feel happy and proud, as I was able to save many young trees. Few years back trees were planted along my village pond. Last week, during my visit, I noticed that the government (under some beautification scheme) had constructed a walking/resting area around the pond, and the contractor had encircled the tree roots with concrete without leaving any breathing space. I was sure that this would eventually lead to the death of the trees within a few weeks or months.
Many times i discussed the issue with the villagers, but unfortunately, no one was interested. I then approached the Village Mukhiya twice. During the first meeting, I received a long lecture on how important trees are and why they should be saved, along with a promise to help. However, in the next discussion, I was told that the matter is not under his jurisdiction.
Not giving up, I finally approached the Zila Parishad member and explained the situation in detail, and I even offered cement for the rework. He turned out to be a nice person and promised to help me. After nearly one week of continuous effort and over 50 km of bike travel, the issue was resolved. Today, the concrete around the trees was removed and replaced with soil.
