How are the 1997 Mercury 25HP 2 strokes?

Looking at trying out a 1997 25HP mercury 2 stroke. Really only thinking about buying it as it comes with a full remote steer/throttle/shift setup and I kinda wanna try a console out on my little aluminum. Price is right, but I’ve always had the mentality to steer away from mercs. I typically stick with Yamaha 4 strokes when it comes to this stuff.

I know virtually nothing about them, and have a ton of questions.

  1. I know all engines of this vintage can have issues, but is there any major common issues I should be aware about? A lot of my use is in the ocean with a good tide, so reliability is very important.

  2. are these engines oil injected?

  3. I expect lots of trolling, and ive never owned a 2 stroke, am I going to run into issues with fouling plugs/hard starting/stalling if I’m trolling for 8+ hours a day? Typically near idle, but often trolling with 10-20% throttle with the currents we have.

  4. lastly, I’ve got a 2016 F20 tiller Yamaha on the boat now, I’ve kept reading that these mercs were closer to 30hp and typically 2 strokes will give you a better hole shot and are generally quicker. Think I’ll see much difference in performance? My F20 is a dog when my 14’ Lund is loaded up with a couple guys and gear. It’ll plane (quite slow to get out of the hole), but might take a bit to get up. I’m always running WOT and only cruise at 20-22km/hr. Unloaded and solo it’ll do about 33km/hr.

Sorry for all the newbie questions. I’ve been nonstop googling but hard to find stuff specific to these models/engine displacement for some reason. Thank you.
